I'm a poor blogger - AT BEST.
but I am a capitalist, and I think thats the only point that Anil Dash is failing to see here: http://www.dashes.com/anil/2004/07/27/optimizing_sear
SEO is flurishing b/c its VERY easy for a company to say - "Why aren't we at the top of Google - let's throw money at the problem!". And also easy to have a cold call, "Hello Company X. We've done market studies (read Searched for 'Company X's business' in google), and see that you are in position Y in google. Wouldn't you like to be #1?" - Which we've gotten!

Aside from that, I DO have a copy of "Search Engine Visibility", but I haven't read it yet.

It is easy, but it doesn't make it the right thing to do. A company could just as easily call and say "We've noticed that you're number #5 in your industry rankings by sales; we've come up with a way to trick the rankings into putting you #1 which you could then claim to be #1 in your marketing to drive customers". Would that be okay? Or "We've noticed you're number #2 in your industry; if you give us X amount of dollars, we'll use a variety of techniques to undermine the #1 and make you #2". Less grey there. It just comes down to business ethics; if someone is driving their business by taking advantage of someone else's resources without permission, or abusing the clearly displayed spirit of a public forum, then said business is acting rather unethically. They may end up rich, but that doesn't make them nice people.

I couldn't agree more!
and what compounds it (a bit) is google's pledge to be "not evil".
I'm just trying to say that if there's a way to make money doing something - people will do it. If its fairly easy, then a lot of people will do it.

Throwing money at the problem can happen in a number of ways - whether it is paying for fly by night SEO firms, or for someone to sit down and really come up with a good Search Engine *strategy* and then execute.
